Fort Lauderdale commissioners voted to accept a proposal from Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build an underground transportation system in the city.
The unsolicited proposal was submitted June 21, and The Boring Company paid a $25,000 fee to the city.
Full details of the proposal are being kept confidential in line with state law.
The underground transportation system will be known as the “The Las Olas Loop.”
According to the city, the system will run in a loop from downtown Fort Lauderdale to Fort Lauderdale beach, providing a quicker trip and alleviating street-level traffic.
Fort Lauderdale says it would become the second city in the world after Las Vegas to benefit from The Boring Company’s technology. In Las Vegas, The Boring Company built two tunnels in just a year, with passenger’s driven in Teslas between three stations.
The Boring Company has also expressed interest in building an underground system in Miami. More news on that to follow.
