Get ready to start your engines because Formula One has announced plans to stage a street race in downtown Miami. That’s right folks. You heard it here first!
If commissioners approve, the first race would be held in October 2019, and be held annually for a decade. A vote on opening negotiations began May 10, with a deal supposed to be reached by July 1 if approved.
Mayor Francis Suarez told The Independent that it would cost the city just $500k per year (other cities have paid up to $40 million in fees just to become a host). The other 99% of costs would be covered by private sources.

Some downtown residents are opposed to the noise and congestion the race will create. A group called A Better Florida Alliance paid the Herald for a full-page ad last October, opposing the race.
